The action takes place in and on a magnificent set designed by JR Bruce. Its multiple levels and crowded, colorful spaces echo the closely packed tenements of early-1900s N.Y.C. A bright, crazy quilt on a bed provides both a visual and thematic centerpiece.

About the Design:

Lynn Nottage’s play takes place in New York City at the turn of the Century. Our production design centered around the idea that the Esther was a thread that tied 3 entirely different worlds; a seedy brothel in the Tenderloin, a ritzy 5th Ave apartment, and a mid-town fabric store, together.  I created a design where these worlds enveloped Esther’s little room, and allowed her to seamlessly travel through the space.  This allowed us to set up multiple tableaus throughout the production, and gave each character a chance to develop beyond the written word
